Game of Thrones is synonymous with sex. The makers of the show have had no qualms about showing romping on screen and this has resulted in some very controversial content featuring incest and rape, but, thankfully, there’s also sex between lovers too. The Seven Kingdoms of Westeros is often a brutal place and fans of the show were left extremely confused when the commander of the Unsullied, Grey Worm, finally consummated his relationship with Daenerys’ confidant, Missandei, despite being a eunuch. In case you’re wondering, a eunuch is a man who has been castrated, which left fans wondering if Grey Worm had a penis at all. That scene took place in episode two of season seven. Prior to going into a potentially deadly battle at Casterly Rock, Grey Worm and Missandei finally acted upon the sexual tension which has been building between them since they met with a kiss.
However, before things go any further, Grey Worm hesitates, knowing that his manhood is not in its natural state. Whilst it’s not explicitly said on the show to what extent the Unsullied have been mutilated, in George R.R. Martin’s books they have been castrated “root and stem”. At the time of its airing, Merriam-Webster tweeted that eunuch was their most searched word as fans tried to work out what was going on.
Now, Nathalie Emmanuel, the actress who plays Missandei, has opened up about this extremely baffling scene and answering the one question on all of our minds (and more) in an interview with Entertainment Weekly – how on Earth were they able to have sex if Grey Worm has no junk?! After all, it has been made clear on the show that eunuchs are unable to feel sexual desire or arousal. “We’ve seen them show their interest in each other, we’ve seen them in a roundabout way express it for each other, but not really say it,” 28-year-old Emmanuel said. “This point is the climax and they physically act upon it.”
“There’s something unique about it purely because of Grey Worm’s situation. His brutal history of being mutilated – there’s a real sense of trust here and that really plays out in this lovely scene where they physically act upon their love,” she continued. “For him to do that is a really big deal and Missandei knows that and doesn’t really care. She just loves him and that intimacy they’ve shared comes to a head.” Emmanuel did not use the word head by accident. In this scene, Grey Worm performs oral sex on Missandei.
The actress also spoke about the vulnerability that viewers see not only from Grey Worm in this scene but Missandei too. “Missandei is always so official and straight and poised so to be vulnerable and see her human side of her, a little off balance, is kind of great and fun to play. She’s kept things very together to stay composed but this scene is the opposite of that.” “She’s quite clear about what she wants because she fears she’ll never have the chance to have that with him again.” The erotic scene can be seen below:
In an interview with Vulture, eunuch expert Dr. Johnson said, “With 4000 years of history of eunuchs and hundreds of thousands of them throughout history, we know very little about eunuch sexuality.” Dr. Johnson then went on to warn fans of the show about making assumptions about eunuchs. “Chinese and Korean eunuchs often married and then, because they were infertile, they would adopt young eunuchs, so we have generations of eunuch family history, each of them marrying and then adopting, and having relatively successful marriages,” Dr. Johnson revealed. “Sir Richard Burton, in his travels, wrote about the eunuchs of Mecca and talked about them being sexually active with their wives.”
“When we had the rise of the Italian castrati, who were castrated usually between the ages of 10 and 12, we have a number of them attempting to marry, and a legal brief from the Church in 1718 said that they shouldn’t be allowed to because eunuchs are too tempting to women.”
“They are more esteemed by lewd women because they can give them all the satisfaction without any risk or danger of pregnancy.” “Sexuality doesn’t require an erect penis,” Dr. Johnson said. “Tongue, lips, fingers – there are all kinds of ways for a male to be sexual with a woman. [Eunuchs] become far less sexual, but they do not become asexual.”
So, contrary to what the majority of us might think, Missandei might actually end up having a better sex life than other characters on the show, including her queen, Daenerys, who remains a little too insistent that she is unable to have children. In fact, many fans have now begun to speculate that she will fall pregnant with Jon Snow’s baby in the show’s final season.
